“Southwell Schools Winter Squash Challenge is a great hit with local youngsters

Southwell Squash Club Junior section has completed a Winter Squash Challenge in partnership with The Minster School and Lowes Wong Junior School, designed to get children active and introduce them to the game of squash.
Twenty one young students took part in four after-school taster sessions with club coach, Kevin Emery, who was assisted by Minster School pupils as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award, and staff from Lowes Wong Junior School.
Annie Duquemin, Southwell Squash Club’s Junior Co-ordinator said: ‘One of the many problems facing squash clubs is attracting youngsters to the sport of squash and making their parents aware of our great game,’ she said. ‘Squash clubs have limited resources to promote the game to the broader community, and Southwell Squash Club received a contribution from parents, and a grant from Newark and Sherwood District Council to develop and run the programme.’
Fiona Houghton, Club and Coach Development Officer at Newark and Sherwood District Council said:’This collaborative approach is a great illustration of the way Newark and Sherwood District Council is working together with local sports clubs to increase participation.’
The Southwell Squash Club Junior sessions are held at Southwell Leisure Centre from 4.20pm on Tuesdays in term time. We can supply rackets; all you need is a pair of non-marking PE shoes. For more information, email Ellie at e.duquemin-sheil@hotmail.com or just come along on a Tuesday night for a free taster session.”
