Welcome to the summer newsletter! Let’s get straight to the most important part:
Annual Membership fees (£40) are due at the end of June – no increase on last year so pay before the end of July and take advantage of the early bird discount of £35! Please make your cheques payable to Southwell Squash Club and send to Alan Wahlers whose contact details can be found at: www.southwellsquashclub.co.uk. Don’t forget to inform us of any change of address, phone number or email address.
At the end of the year, club membership continues to increase with a healthy total of 105 members (73 Seniors, 3 students, and 29 Juniors)
Another season draws to a close with varying degrees of success for the teams. The results are as follows:
Team | Captain | Division | Position | Number in league |
Ladies | Helen Walters | 1 | 2nd | 10 |
Mens 1 | Eddie Lager | 2 | 6th | 10 |
Mens 2 | Dave Hart | 4 | 4th | 10 |
Mens 3 | Gerry Burrows | 4 | 9th | 10 |
Mens 4 | Robin Williams | 5 | 10th | 10 |
Mens 5 | Keith Longmire | 6 | 9th | 11 |
Special congratulations also to the Ladies team who so very nearly came top of their league but made up for it by winning the County Cup.
We have been fortunate to secure the services of another top coach this season. Kev Emery (David Lloyd Aspley Premier player and Level 3 coach) has joined Donna to help with the Juniors on Tuesday evenings and both are also available for Senior coaching.
During last season Donna ran group coaching sessions for Seniors on a Tuesday evening before club nights. These have been suspended over the summer but the plan is to reinstate them next season if demand requires. Kev has offered to join her to increase capacity. Anyone who is interested in joining this group or having individual coaching should contact either Donna (donna1604@yahoo.co.uk or Kev (kevinemery1@hotmail.com for more details.
Club nights continue on Tuesdays from 6.20pm to about 9pm. Numbers fluctuate for reasons unknown but you can always be sure of getting games and everyone is welcome afterwards in The Coach House for beer and sandwiches. It is an ideal opportunity to meet other members, arrange your league games and it still only costs a very credit-crunch friendly £3.00.
Club competitions were held with the finals being played on the 27.410 and the 4.5.10. This year they were organised by Keith Longmire who made full use of the website to keep competitors and other interested parties updated and informed. Many thanks to Keith for his hard work. The results were:
Competition | Winner | Runner -up |
Ladies | Helen Walters | Mary Hind |
Cedric Best | Eddie Lager | Paul Best |
Plate | Brian Pearson | John Clausen |
Vets | Paul Best | Peter Lennard-Jones |
Juniors | Hamish Gallacher | Jack Brooks |
Well done to all the finalists!
This year has seen a variety of successful social events being held. They have included:
- American Handicap Tournament

- End of season Garden party
Many thanks to those involved in both organising and attending these. Look out for news of forthcoming events in the new season!
Summer leagues are now in full swing. If you have not been included but would like to play to keep your hand in over the summer contact Rob Turnbull.
The Club AGM was held on 29th June 2010 at the Admiral Rodney pub in Southwell. A new committee was formed and key posts were elected:
Secretary: Mary Hind
Treasurer: Alan Wahlers
League Secretary: Rob Turnbull
Members: Roger Adley
Helen Walters
Paul Handley
Annie Duquemin
The Chair will be elected at the first committee meeting to be held prior to the start of the season.
Membership on the committee is a small commitment through the year but makes a bit contribution to the running of the club. There are still vacancies so if any one else is interested in joining please contact me asap.
